Chiropractors are primary healthcare professionals responsible for assessing, diagnosing and treating muscoskeletal and spine related conditions.
The role of the chiropractor is to restore the health, function and strength of the spine and joints. This is achieved through a broad range of methods, including manual therapy, soft tissue/ the therapy massage, rehabilitation and diagnostic imaging.
Chiropractors provide a hands-on, non-invasive, safe and drug free care to promote good health and wellbeing.
Modern life creates a lot of physical stress on our bodies. Our modern lifestyle, work habits and poor posture creates dysfunction in our spine and joints.
Prolonged sitting and carrying out repetitive movements can result in inflammation, muscle imbalance, and therefore can increase the risk of an injury.
Dysfunctional joints need to become functional again to reduce pain and increase movement overall. Trauma, strains, sprains and arthritis can also result in joint dysfunction, which is why they need to be treated conservatively through Chiropractic care.
A Chiropractic adjustment is an act of applying force to manipulate a specific joint in a precise direction and angle to correct the joint dysfunction (ie, where the joint is affected or not moving/functioning correctly).
Manual adjustments, but not all, are commonly associated with a ‘popping’ or ‘cracking’ sound. This sound results from gas bubbles forming in the joint as the surfaces are separated. These gas bubbles are visible on an MRI, and linger for a few minutes after the crack has occurred. This process is known as Tribonucleation.
The cracking sound is not a measure of a successful adjustment, merely a by-product of the quick movement of the joint. In simple terms, it is the result of moving a stuck joint, similar to how we can make a popping/cracking noise when we push on our knuckles or bend our knees to a certain point.
